How does ANPR work?
An ANPR system connects to your CCTV or IP cameras, detects each vehicle's plate, and uses OCR to convert it to text in milliseconds. It then checks the plate against your database and triggers an action such as opening a gate, logging the visit, or flagging an unknown vehicle.
Do I need a special ANPR camera?
No. Modern recognition software works with most existing IP and CCTV cameras via RTSP, so you usually don't need dedicated hardware. A good camera angle, resolution and lighting improve accuracy, but the software does the recognition.
How accurate is ANPR?
Leading systems reach around 95% or higher accuracy for clear plates and stay reliable in low light, glare, rain and at speed. Accuracy depends on camera placement and image quality, and improves when the model is tuned for local Indian plates.
How much does an ANPR system cost in India?
Pricing is usually per camera, per lane, or per site on a monthly or annual subscription, and scales with the number of feeds and features. Entry setups start modestly while multi-site or high-speed toll deployments cost more, and a free pilot lets you validate ROI first.
Can ANPR open a boom barrier automatically?
Yes. The software integrates with boom barriers and access-control panels, so a recognised whitelisted plate opens the gate automatically with no guard or RFID tag. Unknown or blacklisted plates are held and flagged instead.
ANPR vs RFID — which is better for vehicle access?
ANPR reads the vehicle's existing number plate, so there are no tags or stickers to issue, lose or replace, and it works on any vehicle including visitors. RFID can be faster in high-speed lanes but adds per-vehicle tag cost, so many sites use ANPR as the primary method with RFID only where needed.
Is ANPR privacy-compliant in India?
Yes, when configured correctly. Privacy-first deployments mask faces where required, can process video on-device at the edge, and align with India's DPDPA 2023 principles of data minimisation and secure storage.
Can ANPR work offline without internet?
Yes. Edge or on-premise processing runs the AI locally, so plate reading and barrier control continue during internet outages — important for remote gates and toll points. Data syncs to the cloud automatically once connectivity returns.

Can it read two-wheeler and commercial plates?
Yes. The model is trained on Indian two-wheeler, commercial and non-standard plates in addition to standard car plates, provided the plate is within the camera's view and reasonably legible.
